Two weeks ago, I didn't know what a signal community was...and now I know that I am part of one!
This past weekend I went to one of my favorite events of the year- the Community of Christ Peace Colloquy in Independence, MO. This year's theme was Signal Communities: Hope of Zion. the Colloquy was very inspiring as always. It helped me to re-realize that we are not alone, that there are lots and lots of people working to create peace in the world. I was intellectually stimulated by a history of "signal communities" from Jesus to today. I was challenged by the stories of struggling to maintain community from the leaders of Koinonia Farms, a well-established intentional community in Georgia. And I was reminded how important the work we are doing on this blog is by a testimony by Karyn.
My last realization was that Outreach International was creating signal communities all over the world. A testimony from a woman that worked with Outreach International in the Philippines made me realize how well our work fit in with this concept. One of the aspects that signal communities share is that they share things in common. They also all have the full participation of each member. Both of these qualities fit very well with the work that Outreach International is doing in communities. Radical justice & Authentic participation. Powerful concepts!
If you would like to hear any of these talks, you can listen to them at http://www.cofchrist.org/peacecolloquy/. You should especially listen to Karyn's testimony which is part of the talks titled "Signal Communities that Reflect the Vision of Christ."
