Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler came to Congress yesterday (via car this time) to make their cases once again for a financial bailout. While the auto giants blame their economic woes mostly on the recession, we all know that it is much more complicated than what they claim. Greed surely has a role. Yet, Congress will no doubt keep them from falling into the pits of bankruptcy.
At the same time, a Government Oversight document came out saying that the Administration is not properly overseeing the $700 billion bailout that has already been partly doled out to the various financial institutions.
While it takes several economic experts to understand the ins and outs of these financial packages, anyone can recognize that a good percentage of the money will not go to the people who need it most. NGO's and other developmental organizations know this all too well. They've made many mistakes that have lead to corruption and hoarding in the past. That is why Outreach International has become extra vigilant in getting the money to the local people. The video above shows just why we should be rethinking the financial crisis and the people who need our government's assistance the most.
Barack Obama has admitted that financial support around the globe will take a back seat to the economy here. Unfortunately, he has fallen into the same trap that many politicians do -- making this into an either/or, us/them situation when it's not at all.
How can we start a movement of people that understand that the financial health of the poorest around the world is a global concern? Outreach International's newest video might just spur something in itself....
