Diane Sadler, Communications Specialist for Outreach International, went to see "A Powerful Noise" last Thursday. She wrote some great thoughts about the movie.
On March 5th, ten employees and friends of Outreach International attended the special showing of “A Powerful Noise,” a film on women’s challenges and victories, and the kind of empowerment that Outreach International has been fortunate enough to participate in. The stories seemed so much like the ones we hear first-hand every day: Madame Urbain in Africa who, because her father had the foresight and love to send his daughter to school, traveled Mali to talk to girls and their fathers about protecting them from the dangers of illiteracy. Hanh, the young woman in VietNam who contracted HIV and wasn’t about to take the shame and exclusion, but began teaching others the simple science of how to prevent it. Nada, a mother whose family and community were ravaged by wars in Bosnia, and yet organized a group of women to create agricultural cooperatives and fair trade markets to restore their lives.
All of these women, in addition to caring for themselves and their families, also energized themselves to care for others – strangers – those in mutual exclusion and pain. And in doing so, lives, and communities, and countries are being changed.
Dr. Lorna Labayan oversees consultancy work for Outreach International, training leaders and field workers in huge international organizations like Plan and others in the unique process of helping people to help themselves. She works in Egypt, Rwanda, El Salvador, Paraguay, Brasil, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Philippines, and Vietnam, to name a few, to teach workers, most of them women, to lift their voices and share their skills in transforming their families and communities.
Why is this so important for women, and important that we focus on women? Women are 50% of the world’s population. But women make up over 70% of the world’s poor, the world’s illiterate, the world’s most abused, the world’s most silent.
But it’s also been shown that when women have a greater voice in decision-making, that health needs, family needs, children’s needs, even financial needs are given higher priority. “Working with women strategically makes good investment sense. Women, more than men, tend to parlay improvements in their own lives into the lives of their children and communities. Increases in income typically translate into greater investment in children’s education and health care. Education for girls and women plays a strong role in the next generation’s health and well-being. And the entire world benefits from the creativity, intelligence and effort that flower when girls and women are freed from strictures that keep them uneducated, silenced and relegated to home and field.” – A Powerful Noise
That’s what Outreach International has done for 30 years - empowers women to succeed. And fortunately, in the last 10 years, government organizations and governments have increased efforts on genuine women inclusion and participation in development efforts. “A Powerful Noise” showed the many organizations that are working on behalf of women’s rights throughout the world.

And join Outreach International in our work to empower women throughout the world.
“Without progress in the situation of women, there can be no true social development. Human rights are not worthy of the name if they exclude the female half of humanity. The struggle for women’s equality is part of the struggle for a better world for all human beings and all societies.” - Boutros Bautros-Ghali, UN Secretary General

All things will come round to anyone who will but wait. We should have the patience to await, then success will not far away from us.
