I realized something tragic the other day. I am a typical American in a lot of ways. What made me realize that was that I had totally forgotten about Darfur. Because I hadn't heard about the war there for a while, I just figured everything was better. Then I saw the headline "Refugees Flood Into Darfur Camp After Fighting" and I was appalled to learn that the war that has displaced 2.7 million people and killed over 300,000 is still going on. Actually recent news is that 26,000 people were displaced in the last few weeks, one of the largest flights of people in the last year.
However, I was pleased to read that today the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Sudan's president, accusing him of being a war criminal for supporting local militias. This is great news. Save Darfur is asking people to take action now to encourage Obama to "immediately appoint a high-level official with the stature, mandate and authority to be the U.S. point person on Sudan-and bring an end to the genocide." Certainly this is a tremendous opportunity for peace in this war-torn country that we must take advantage of.
Let's not forget the poeple of Darfur anymore! Take action and learn more about the war in Sudan.
