The recent election dispute in Iran and the seemingly likely vote-rigging in that election make me realize again how important free and fair elections are. While I try to respect other forms of government different from democracy and recognize that there are benefits and drawbacks in every form of government, I truly believe in the power of participation. I believe that every person has the right to participate in their government. This right should be protected by the government and it should be treasured by the people. And it is essential to development.
While democracy certainly doesn't guarantee equitable development, I believe the principle of participation that is inherent in a healthy democracy empowers people to be more engaged in all aspects of their life. Sustainable development in communities requires the full participation of community members. Consequentially, one of the main effects of poverty is a culture of silence--poor people's voices are not heard, their opinions are not considered--they are silenced.
When someone is engaged in electing government officials, they are more connected to the functioning of the government. They know what programs are available to them if they were in need; they know when government officials are stealing their tax dollars; they know how to change the government if it isn't working for their interests. They then can apply these principles to other arenas of their life.
While this is an idealist model, it helps get at the heart of a major cause and effect of poverty--lack of authentic participation. By promoting healthy democracy (nonviolently of course), we can promote authentic participation.

Hello,
My name is Bill Hawthorne, and I represent maacenter.org, a leading web resource for asbestos exposure and mesothelioma cancer information. Our organization is dedicated to increasing awareness of the terrible health consequences of asbestos exposure through the distribution of the best informational materials and public outreach efforts.
I found your site through a search and decided to contact you because of its high environmental, sustainable and green presence which is extremely important in our movement. Your viewers are extremely savvy and motivated. The promotion of how buildings should now be built using sustainable green products to avoid asbestos and mesothelioma as well as the awareness of past buildings and preventative steps in avoiding asbestos exposure are extremely important. My goal is to get a resource link on your site/blog or even to provide a guest posting to be placed.
I look forward to hearing from you. Please feel free to check out our website at www.maacenter.org. Thank you for your time and consideration.
