We must take advantage of this time of opportunity in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, where illiteracy stands at 48% and unemployment is at 50%.
Outreach International runs 74 schools in Haiti, ten of which have nutrition programs. Altogether, we are providing opportunity through education to 7,000 students.
Outreach International has been working in Haiti through the toughest of times. Now is the time to expand these efforts to take advantage of the favorable circumstances and help transform the lives of millions of people.
Obama has pledged to review US development assistance. Sec. of State Clinton has a special interest in Haiti and Pres. Bill Clinton is the special envoy to Haiti for the UN. More importantly, the US has had a history of negative interference in Haiti. For these reasons and more, the US should refocus its development efforts in Haiti.
